FRC-K20 First Track Test |
|
Pacific Raceway, Oct 12, 2009 - well I am only 20 odd days late in letting everyone know about our first K20 test... so what's a little delay between friends;-)
The weather in Seattle was cool and thankfully dry. We had a few short shakedown sessions to make sure we were leak free, adjust belts etc.
When we finally did start to flex the K20's muscles we were surprised right away by the strength accelerating out of the corners. In fact, the gearing we had in the transaxle was calculated for a full race prep motor (350hp & 10,000 rpm) and we found that with the stock motor we were on the 8000rpm redline in 6th gear almost as soon as the car hit the front straight. It hit 126mph and 8000rpm with over 1700' of straight away to go. The other big tell was lap time. In September, we were down at Pacific raceway for 2 separate lapping days with the FCR-14 (one with a stock motor & one with the 1530cc). Now in fairness, before I get into the time comparison, the open lapping days are not at full race speed because you get held up when you catch cars before the let by zones. But that being said, the fastest times from each day should be a fairly good comparison.
So now that I have thrown the disclaimer out there, the K20 was a full 4 seconds faster and that was without being able to accelerate down the straight away. Another important item we validated with this test is the handling. One potential concern we had was a balance change when moving from the lighter motorcycle engine the Honda powerplant and Elite transaxle. We found the handling to be every bit as balanced and predictable as the FRC-14.
In Closing, I would say the car exceeded our expectations. Based on the test results the only thing we have done is order a revised 3rd to 6th ratio change. The change will see us come out of the corners every bit as strong but extend our top end with the stock motor to 158mph versus the 126mph we saw with this set.
